The Proyecto Mono Tocón
The Proyecto Mono Tocón is a conservation project that was initiated in 2007 by Le Conservatoire pour la Protection des Primates, the conservation association of La Vallée des Singes Primate Park in France. The goal of the project is the conservation of the endangered San Martin Titi monkey (Callicebus oenanthe, locally known as the mono tocón). This Titi monkey is one of the three endemic primate species of Peru, and can only be found in the San Martin Department (north-eastern Peru).
The project is supported by various conservation organisations and European zoos, and has been adopted as the conservation program of the European red Titi breeding program (EEP).
The project has focussed the first years on research, as little was known about the distribution of the species. With the data obtained in the first years conservation activities are currently being developped. Besides research, an educationan program has been active since 2007.
The San Martin is probably the most endangered primate species of Peru. Urgent action is needed to prevent the extinction of this species in the near future.
